Contacts transfer

I have a newbie question....sorry.....is it possible to transfer my contacts from my iMac to another iMac at my friends house

Yep, easy. Open contacts on your Mac then choose File -> Export -> Contacts Archive. Then save the file. Next, move the file (via email or thumb drive) to the other Mac. Then reverse the process using the Import function.

If there are contacts on the destination Mac, I recommend backing them up before starting this just in case.
