Contacts won't sync iMac to iPhone

I entered a new contact on my iMac running mountain lion and the info did not sync over to my iPhone. What setting do i need to tweak in preferences to enable sharing of contacts across devices?

Make sure iCloud is on in both the devices, and in iCloud settings, turn contacts on

Aye to the advice above. Your iPhone's contacts probably have google on by default.

Is there any way to sync an iPad, iPhone and an iMac - Calendars and Contacts - without iCloud. I really do not want my data in the Apple (or any other) "cloud".

my not so smart nokia 700(symbian) and iPad-mini are in perfect sync...but my iMac is not....iCloud is not an option. Is there a proper way of direct sync?

I found this: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmovecalendars.html which solved my dilemma. I now have my iPhone and iPad syncing with my iMac and I have cleared the information I had in iCloud. I don't know anything about the nokia 700(symbian) so I can't help there.
