Hello, I bought a new iMac at the end of August, which has thrown continual kernel panics -- up to four a day.

I've been in touch with Apple but to no avail. The Mac has been into an Apple engineer who says the machine is fine.

Between us we've done four clean installs.

After the latest clean install I moved items from my HD manually rather than using time machine but the crashes continue. Apple insists it's a software issue.

I cannot tell when or if I am introducing a rogue file because the panics are so few and far between.

The files coming over date right back to 2002 when I bought a gooseneck Mac. I notice that in some of the folders there is a file called "icon?" which I am deleting as and when I find them. Could these be causing the issue?

I've noticed that most panics happen when I am using Safari, although that is a high-use app and it may be coincidence.

A typical crash report is below. Any help appreciated.

Will

NB: I've also unplugged all peripherals but the crashes happen when they are unattached.

Two things to try, if you haven't already tried them:

1. Safe boot -- hold down shift key at boot.
This boots with only Apple extensions.
Run this way for a day or two.
Still getting crashes?
Then, try option 2:

2. Create a new, "test" account:
a. open users & groups
b. click the lock and enter your [administrative] password
c. click the "+" sign
d. set the new account to have administrative privileges. Give it a simple name and password that you can remember.
e. now, log OUT of your "regular" account and log into the new account.
f. DON'T migrate anything into this new account. Just use it "bare bones".

Run that way for a little while. Are you still getting kernel panics?

The reason you want to try a second test account is that it will "run" without any of the "past baggage" you may have brought over from the old computer (or anything else you've added on the new one).

If the new account "runs clean", then it's time to start looking in the regular account for what's messing you up.
This can be a difficult job. But there could be "something there" that's causing the panics.

One other thing:
Did you add any RAM?

Thank you, Fisherman. I haven't tried either of those yet.

However earlier today I did another clean install then dragged my personal folder over from back-ups (avoiding Time Machine) ... and it crashed as it tried to write the folder.

I have now done a second erase and install, carefully selecting the folders I need. Success so far!

Two of my folders had Disk Warrior gumf in them, so I've left those in back up. Fingers crossed, I may be on top of it.

Best wishes,

Chiefsub

Two crashes so far this morning and it's not even 1030hrs. On to Apple yet again. As to Ram, yes, I had 16MB fitted at the factory.

OK, one more time:
Why don't you try the two suggestions I posted above in reply #2 ??
