Immediately when the AEBS began allowing the USB connection, I hooked up external hard drives to my MacBook Pro and began using those external hard drives to store my files. (I have more Mp3s, for example, than my hard drive could hold).

I have now also moved to the situation where I use one of these external drives as my backup drive for Time Machine.

I would assume many many laptop owners have a similar setup. Otherwise, the MacBook's limited hard drive size and storage makes it fairly useless for someone using their MacBook as their primary computer if they also have a sizeable amount of files to deal with whether from video, photos, music, etc

Since I have had the AEBS and external drives hooked up this way, I have had continual problems with my MacBook losing connection to the external hard drives. The current .4.2 update to the AEBS software is the worst yet.

When you get on these forums and search for connectivity issues like this, you will see that since about 2007, these sorts of issues have occurred. As new AEBS software versions come out, the problem seems to either go away or re-manifest itself.

My hope in creating this thread is to create a single source for discussion of this problem, because, as of now, it appears when the problem is temporarily fixed, the threads addressing the problem are left in the dust until the next time the problem arises when a new thread is then created.

So, I'll dive in here with the current manifestation of this recurring problem:

Do not install the .4.2 version of the AEBS software if you have this setup. You will constantly lose connection to your external drives.

I reverted to the old version .4.1, and have had no problems.

I'm sure eventually, I will upgrade to a new version of the software, and it will be fine, and eventually a newer version will have this problem occur again. So, I hope people use this thread as a place to discuss this problem until Apple fixes it for good.
