So last I checked, continuity on the third gen iPad wasn't possible because it didn't have the latest bluetooth profile or something along those lines. Okay, fine.

But all of a sudden, a few days ago, I got a message on my third gen iPad asking if I wanted to turn continuity on so I could receive my text messages and all that on it. I enabled it, and now it works.

What changed? Or did nothing change, and I was misinformed?

SMS relay and phone calls threw Mac are different technologies then the handoff feature. You won't be able to start an email and pick it up on your other devices as that's a Bluetooth handoff feature. But SMS relay and the phone call stuff rely on a different technology.
