This has been a tricky thing to google so maybe someone here knows:
I have an iPhone 6 and a 2012 retina macbook pro, and continuity isn't playing nice. I have it enables on both devices, wifi and bluetooth on on both devices, but its just not working. The only continuity thing I can do is answer calls on my laptop. I can't seem to get handoff to work for the life of me. Is there some specific action I should be doing for handoff? My understanding was that I just start typing an email on my laptop and when I am ready to leave I can find the mail I'm composing with just a swipe from the lock screen.

It works for me. There is a rather foolish amount of ringing going on when I get a phone call now. :)
