Hello, I have a couple of questions about this. I'm planning to buy an iPhone 4 without contract from New York City for $600 + taxes.

  • Does an AT&T SIM card come in the box?
  • Can I activate the device with an AT&T card anywhere in the world?
  • After activation, can the device be used without a sim card?

Thanks.

I hope you understand that you will still be locked to AT&T with an non-JB USA iPhone4. If you can get an iP4 from the UK, Canada, or some other country where they aren't locked to one cell company, it will give you options for using cheaper cell service if/when you travel.

That's right. The OP will always have to rely on an unlock to be able to use the phone anywhere outside of the states. Since the phone is locked to AT&T, after restoring or updating firmware, it will once again be locked to AT&T and require an unlock.

And there's currently no soft unlock available for iPhone 4's that ship with firmware 4.1. At this point, that's most if not all of them.
