Prior to iOS 16 the Control Center had a "Home" icon which when selected showed accessories. Those accessories could be turned on/off with a single press. Now, a single press displays that accessory's control (on/off switch). So, it takes another press to control the accessory. Alternatively, you can display all your accessories in the Control Center, which causes needless clutter and seems to defeat the purpose of having quick access to stuff in the Control Center.

I'm guessing there's no way to go back to the previous, less complex behavior.

Apple explains it here: Control accessories with Home on iPhone - Apple Support

Control accessories in Control Center

When you’re home with your iPhone, you can see the relevant scenes and accessories for that moment in Control Center. For example, a coffee maker may appear in the morning and be replaced by your bedside lamp at night.
Open Control Center, then tap a button to turn an accessory on or off, or touch and hold the button until controls appear.
To quickly see all your scenes and accessories (except cameras), tap
the Home Favorites button
.
If you don’t want accessories to appear in Control Center, go to Settings

> Control Center, then turn off Show Home Controls.

The circular icon on the left of each accessory’s button still acts as an immediate on/off switch when tapped.
