I've always had my PC hooked up to my ultra wide.....

Finally got around to redoing the setup. When the MBP is connected via USB C to the display, it plays audio through the onboard speaker.
I don't see any volume options though under Outout
. I end up going to system pref, sound alerts and lowering the levels way down...

Just short of me using the dang menu of the display OSD, is there a way to have speakers that are built in recognized over USB C ?

Unfortunately not natively. Audio out via HDMI and Display Port have no volume control on macOS. I've never understood Apple's choice to not support DDC out of the box as so many displays can use it. Luckily there is an App that will enable this and even allow you to map controls to the regular media keys: https://displaybuddy.app

I use this with my 2018 MBP and 29" LG UltraWide connected via HDMI and can control Brightness, Contrast and Volume. Works great.
