it would be great if you could remotely connect to your iPhone or iPad with each other and access and control each other's media like music etc. Like lying on my couch now and surfing my iPad but I wanted to play music from my iPhone across the room.

Basically launch the other screen your other device. Basically use Apple ID to confirm it is linked to both devices before launching screen on other device.

I've never been able to do that and I've never seen an app to allow it.

However, for whatever it's worth, there's Remote which allows you control iTunes from a Mac or PC on the same network.

I like the app because it works with my PowerPC Mac versions of iTunes.

I keep my entire music library on both iPhone and iPad 10.5. Both can control the Sonos sound system. You need only install the Sonos app on both devices.
