Convert avi/mpeg4 to DVD

hello. new to my MB and iDVD.

i have several avi & mpeg4 videos i'd like to convert to DVD to watch on a stand alone DVD player.

is this possible with iDVD? if not, can someone direct me to a piece of software - preferrably freeware/shareware.
