I've been looking for an application on my mac to convert these dreadful .djvu files into common files
(especially pdf and epub)

I've tried djvu viewer and macjviewer to convert the files into pdf.
It gets to the point where it completes the "converting" into a .ps file
but when I open the .ps file,
the Preview application says there's an error with the file
and cannot be converted.

Help!!
I would be willing to pay for an application if I have to.
Thanks

DejaVu is largely obsolete, but the format is not "dreadful." This is not to say that your specific files are not problem. But that's just it. They are your specific files. We know nothing about your .djvu files. Therefore, we can make no suggestions that will help you fix them.

FWIW, I have the DjVu 4.0 Internet plug-in installed. It works very well with every .djvu file that I have thrown at it. It is important to understand that .djvu, .pdf, and ePub are three very different formats. ePub is a superset of HTML. PDF is a pure ASCII subset of PostScript. DjVu is a compressed format for scanned documents. The only thing to be gained by converting these documents to PDF is larger file sizes.

The stand-alone version of the software MisterMe mentions is actually quite nice, and converts successfully to pdf for me.

DjVuLibre:

But you would need some kind of OCR software to turn your image file into selectable text to make a proper ePub file (at least, my .djvu files are just images and can't be selected).
