Convert External SSD to APFS

Please help, my new Samsung external SSD, I want to convert it to APFS and encrypt it, but I am running into errors.

I see no way to add the GUID Partition Table...the Partition button is greyed out, unlike my old Samsung T1 SSD.

When I erase the drive, it gives no option for a partitioning scheme.

Go to Disk Utility - View - Show all devices. Select your external Disk, the one with the hardware name, select partition and change to GUID and APFS
