convert .mkv to .avi ?

I am a novice with torrent files. I have to or 3
files, in the .mkv format.
My player, VLC, is unable to play the video on my
mac mini. OS X.4.11.
So I want to convert to .avi.

Is there a simple way to do so, without being a tech savvy type ?

Strange because VLC does play mkv files on my MBP and Mini but I am on 10.6 though...
