Convert MTS files

I have many single MTS video files from a Canon camcorder. I do not have the ADVCD packages they were enclosed in.

What is the best way to convert them to an archival format that I can play on the ipad which I would then hook up to the HD TV? I converted some via iSkysoft to Mp4 format but there was indeed quite a bit of loss -- the picture was far more saturated than the original files played via the camcorder.

I used to use an app called Smart Converter Pro, it is available from the Mac App Store. You can also buy it from their website: www.shedworx.com/smart-converter-pro

Smart thing about it, is it can also batch convert them.
