I have a mid 2012 MBP that I'm about to give away. It has tons of files, settings, software, etc, and I don't have time to clean it right now.
I'm therefore looking for a way to make an image file of it (using SuperDuper?), and virtualize on my newer iMac with VMware/Parallels. Both the old and the new Mac run High Sierra.
1) Will VMware/Parallels recognize the SuperDuper file? If not, is there any other tool that makes image files that are supported by VMware/Parallels?
2) I will have to keep the image file on an external drive due to size. Does VMware/Parallels support this? I know it will be slow, but this is the only possible way.

The SD clone will be BOOTABLE on any Mac than can run that version of High Sierra.

Why would you need "virtualization"?
Just connect the cloned drive and BOOT the newer Mac from it.
