How do I convert/save a screen (cmd+shift+3) or snap shot (cmd+shift+4) taken on my macbook pro to a jpg file?

If you prefer the .jpg format, you can change the default format for screencap images:
In Terminal.app, type:
defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

Just wondering, but why JPEG? It's lossy, and if you're taking a picture of UI elements it'll look considerably worse than a lossless format like PNG.

I'm not sure about the OP, but I use screen caps frequently to illustrate when answering posts. Quality isn't as critical in that application, and PNG is roughly 7 times the size of JPG, so it burns up disc space unnecessarily. For applications where the quality of the image is critical, PNG would be better.
