hey

I've got old macbook 4,1. the back light on the screen is dead and I replaced in last year...

now I'm thinking of using it as a media server but was wondering if I close the lid & keep it active (nosleep) or set the brightness to 0 what is the power usage like? I know its got a 60W adaptor but would it be use all of that running in this way?

cheers for the support

You can get an idea of how much energy your mac consumes, with coconut battery (on the bottom it says how many watts you consume when on battery). My guess is, you'll mostly be in the 20-25 W range. Chargers are always overspec'd as they're supposed to be able to supply your machine with power AND charge the battery at the same time.

Apple refers to "running with lid closed" as "clamshell mode". Read up on it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131

It's probably quite doable, but I'd recommend you make sure the machine has breathing space and the vents are not obstructed.
