Handbrake won't convert VCD, and while I could possibly use isqunt, this would only convert it to ipod format...

The resolution of VCD in PAL/SECAM format is 353x288, about the same as the real resolution of a VHS video tape. The benchmark resolution for the iPod is 640x480. Therefore, iPod format is massive overkill for a converted VCD.
