Converting AAC to MPEG audio

I was wondering, if I've always converted my music in my iTunes library to AAC audio, would it lower the quality to convert it to MP3/MPEG audio in order to save space? Because iPod's play mpeg audio files right? And they take up about half the amount of space as AAC files.
