What is the easiest (and free) way to convert a lone M4A file to a WMV? I am sure there is a free download somewhere but the first one I saw did not work on Mac.

Well first of all, M4A is an audio format, and WMV is a video format. Do you want to make that conversion? Or do you want to convert either M4A to WMA or M4V to WMV?
