converting .avi to mp4 to use in itunes movies for Ipad and Macbook pro

I have some dl'd movies that are in .avi. What should I use to convert them to .mp4 to be able to upload them into itunes for viewing on ipad and mac book pro? thanks!

I'm pretty sure Handbrake can do that.

Haven't used it in a while. Pretty slick app.
