I have recently gotten a portable video player (Archos 504) that I need to watch instructional videos. Most of these videos are in DVD format and I've been converting them to MP4 format using HandBrake/MediaFork. I'm converting them with the ffmpeg encoder @500kbps scaling the resolution down to ?x272 pixels. They look awesome.
I also have a number of files in various formats that I need to include on this player, mpg, wmv, avi, etc. Since HandBrake/MediaFork on converts from DVDs I've attempted to use a couple different pieces of software to convert these videos to MP4 format, MPEG Streamclip, Quicktime, and another whose name I can't remember.
Without fail the quality of these videos is much much worse that the quality of the videos straight from DVD, and much much worse than the quality they were in their original file format. I'm getting lots of artifacts, blurriness, pixelation... sometimes the audio track disappears.
I'm not completely bent on having them in MP4 format as I believe this player supports other kinds of files, but I would like them to be at the native resolution of the player (480x272... which basically means 272 pixels tall by whatever wide) to save battery power.
Any help that can help me get these videos converted that gets them to look as close as their original format would be great. Thanks.
