Converting HFS 1TB hard drive to NTFS

Is there a software that can do this.
And is NTFS readable and writable by Mac OS X?
Is NTFS the best cross-platform format for my external hard drive?

It can only be done by wiping the drive (removing all data from it).

OSX can only write to NTFS with additional software (Google MacFUSE and NTFS-3G).
