Can anyone point me in the direction of some free software that will allow me to extract the audio into an MP3 file, from an MP4.

Take a left @ Google
or a right @ yahoo
either should give you directions to a freeware mp4 ->mp3 tool.
 
That's what I tried first mate, but I'm struggling to find anything useful for the mac.
