I'm pretty certain that this was not in 10.4.8, and that it has not been mentioned.

While in dashboard, if you press space+:apple: (or your spotlight shortcut), spotlight opens up in the background. This is great if you want to open a widget without your hands having to move ALL THE WAY to the mouse...
 
Why is this useful?

e.g. Today, I was using a widget (in class;) ), when I wanted to check up a word. Instead of either exiting the dashboard or having to use the mouse to open the dictionary widget, I could just use the keyboard...
 
So you do a spotlight search for the widget, open a new copy of the widget, and the advantage is that you don't have to move the cursor to an existing dictionary widget?

I'm not impressed.
