Cooling advantage to Laptop Stand?

So I have been contemplating purchasing an mstand simply to hold my laptop at my desk when it's in clamshell mode. I also considered the bookarc but I don't want to have to pull the laptop out every time I want to turn it on.

Is a stand really needed or will the MBP run just as hot as sitting on a desk?

Have you been noticing dangerously high temperatures while in clamshell mode? If not, I wouldn't worry and would just keep it on your desk.
