I read an article a few years ago about building your own Mac using a Gigabit Ethernet logic board. One of the things I remembered from the article was that the logic board has a large Philips chip on the bottom that needs a heatsink.
Anyway, a friend's Gigabit G4 is playing up (it randomly crashes in OS 9 and kernal panics when attempting to boot OS X). We pulled it to bits and found that the Philips chip on the bottom did not have a heatsink. There's a little groove in the case where the heatsink is supposed to go, but there's nothing there. Could the lack of a heatsink cause the random crashes?
