So my almost five year old MacBook fan has finally showed its age by having its fan die on me. I was planning on buying a new MB in a few months anyway so I'm not gonna bother getting it fixed. That said, will a cooling pad be of any use to me or should I just get a new MB sooner? I use Flash a lot so my MB gets really hot and with the fan dead, it shuts down often.

No because it doesn't cool the inside and doesn't make the air circulate. I am affraid this would probably not be enough. Now you can still fix it, don't take the risk to break it.
