Coolscan 5000 errors

argh,
my father in law loaned me his Coolscan 5000 ED so I could scan my old slides into digital, but I can't get it to scan, not even once.

I've installed both Nikon View 4.0.2 and Vuescan (latest) with no luck. Nikon View keeps saying to remove the film holder and try again. Vuescan says "insert film then click ok" but it never seems to believe I've installed a single slide into the single slide holder... ARGHHH

Ideas?
