Can you not do this? Google searching says you can double tap the word but that still selects the whole text for me.

only way i figured out i can do this is to make screenshot and copy/paste text this way. Seems pretty cumbersome.

In my experience the double-tap to select text seems to behave differently in different apps. In some apps it does nothing (this includes Safari). In at least one app I use it selects a whole paragraph. In the Notes app it selects a word. In the Kindle app it does the same as a single tap.

To select individual words for copy/paste, tap and hold seems to work everywhere.

I don’t understand why you would ever need to take a screenshot to do this, so maybe I misunderstand what the problem actually is.

The OP is saying that within the Messages app you can’t select individual words to copy, and in my experience he is absolutely right.
Okay, that makes sense. Thanks. I think it might be faster/fewer steps, then, to tap-hold the particular text, copy it, paste into Notes and then copy the word? 🤷‍♂️ Maybe it’s a toss-up.

Indeed, that’s one way to get around Apple’s complete lack of care and attention yet again. Or as posted above, take a screenshot and then copy from there.
