I have a couple of hundred e-mail messages that I'd like to copy to an external drive and save. I'd want to save them in the same format they are now
in, i.e. I want to be able to see date/time/subject/sender etc. Once I can
save them on the external drive, I'll delete them from my active mail
application so it runs more efficiently. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

In your user's library look for the Mail folder, there you will have all your emails, copy them to your external HDD and test that you can reopen them, then erase them from your HDD.
They are .emlx files.

Copying Mac Mail

Sounds like a good idea - but the file comes out as a .mbox folder and
I can't open this folder up! Arrrgggghhhhh!
