Copy Mail folder vs Export Mailbox - or best way to backup emails manually

Can I just copy Mail folder to external HDD ? Or should I use a Export Mailbox ? (Export comprime files so Mailbox has half a size.)
I have backuped emails in TimeMachine but If new version of OS doesn't restore TimeMachine I just download photos and icloud drive files from icloud and restore emails manually.

What method do you use ?
