Copying from CD to HD seems very slow

I copied just under 700MB from a CD to my Hard Drive (imac)

It took about 13 mins, seems very slow. Is this normal or is something going on. I have hundreds of gigabytes of free space.

The drive is slot-loading, and slot-loading drives are slow...its a compromise between convenience and speed...

two, Im trying to make a VCD, copy the files to HD then burn with "Burn"

The maximum read speed on a slot drive would be 24x (3.6 MB/s).

I sometimes have the problem on my MacBook Pro but my iMac ismuch faster dont know why.
