Before upgrading to El Capitan, I was able to copy an item either within a portable drive or from my hard drive by just hovering over the name of the portable drive. This would then open up and I could choose which folder I wanted.
Since upgrading it doesn't always work and I have to wait for ages for the portable drive to respond.
