I wanted some additional info on the new intel chips that will be in macs in the future. Will the new chips be a big step foward for someone like me (surf the web, email, itunes) The G5 chips were 64 bit. I am not sure what that means other than additional memory. Will there be a big gap in performance between the current chips and the new chips? Will software companys stop supporting 32 bit apps for 64 anytime soon?

No. For your purposes, there will be neglible difference between the new chip and the old one. Eventually, software will be migrated from 32bit to 64bit but it's still at a premature stage. Especially since the 64bit chips emulate 32bit very well. I can imagine 32bits application sticking around for at least another 5 years if not more if that's what you're concerned about.
