I resolved the actual problem a while ago, but I can't understand the cause.

When I first got my MacBook in the summer, I was updating it. The update required a restart, so it logged me out and started to update itself by showing the HD icon and the progress bar. My friend, who found out I got my new MacBook, suggested we try out video chatting. There was a button labeled 'Quit', so thinking it would just quit the updates and I could come back to them later, I pressed it.
My computer restarted itself only up to the log-in screen. I entered my password, and it went to a blue screen and back to the log-in screen again. I attempted entering gibberish, and the log-in screen shook like it should, but it had locked me out of my computer. I called Apple Support, and they told me I had corrupt my files by Force Quitting the update application.
Eventually, by using the Disk Utility, I restored my system back to normal.

My question is, I know I didn't force quit because I didn't enter the keyboard combination, I just pressed the 'Quit' button. What did I do to cause the problem?

EDIT: Sorry, not Disk Utility, but whatever discs came with the computer in case of a problem.
I'm not too great with the whole Mac vocabulary.

Thanks.
