I just installed an optibay caddy with new WD blue 750gb drive. I thought things were smooth sailing until I began copying some things over to an external drive and got some errors about corrupt and unreadable files.
The next thing I knew the entire filesystem had corrupted. Disk utility was unable to repair but I was able to use an app called DiskWarrior to rebuild the journaling system and extract some data. Most of it proved to be too corrupt for rescue.
Formatted the drive and tried again with same results. Computer will nearly freeze up when trying to access the corrupted files.
A surface scan revealed thousands of bad blocks!? I don't think this is right.
SMART scan says I have UDMA CRC errors. This sounds like drive cable or caddy PATA-to-SATA controller problems.
My question is, do these PATA enclosures tend to be flaky? Could I have damaged the PATA cable when wiggling it off the DVD drive?
