Cost efficient multi monitor setup?

Hello,

My 2014 iMac 5K is frequently overheating so I think it's time for another upgrade.

I want to have four 4K/5K monitors scaled to 2560x1440. I don't do any video editing or photography work so I figure the most important thing is to have a GPU powerful enough to do the scaling smoothly.

I have considered various combinations of a 5K iMac + eGPU + 3 monitors or even a Mini + eGPU + 4 monitors. Is an eGPU stable/reliable enough to be central to any potential setup? Any opinions on what is the most cost efficient way to do this?
