I'm currently in an at&t family plan with my father who has an iPhone 4. As of now, I have a 'dumb phone' for which we pay $15/month for unlimited data, and $5/month for 200 texts, in addition to the cost of having the line for talk (I believe it's $10/month?). I've been looking into upgrading to an iPhone 4 on contract price, however I'm not sure how this would affect our monthly bill; could anyone give me some insight into how much extra we'd pay.

Thanks so much

Price wise, you can add iPhone 4 at the same exact price.

For AT&T, total additional cost to existing family plan is:
  • $9.99 for additional line (if needed)
  • $15 for 200 MB/month data plan or $25 for 2 GB/month data plan
  • $10 for 1000 messages or $20 for unlimited messages (you may be able to grandfather existing $5 for 200 message feature)

It's interesting. I believe that under the family plan, the iPhone will become the primary phone and will have the first-phone $60 base fee attached to it.

That's how it is with me at the very least. The rest of the phones on the plan will become $9.99 a piece. There doesn't seem to be a way to avoid a $100-$120.

That's not necessarily true. I have the only iPhone 4 on our family plan and I'm not the primary line.

Are you on Verizon? One of my friends on Verizon told me of this awhile back. I am curious as to if this rule still holds.

My mom had an iPhone on an individual Att plan at $70/month for:
- $40/mo for 450 minutes
- $30/mo for unlimited data

I joined up with her on a family plan and now the bill is $105/mo for both of us having iPhones:
- $60/mo for 550 minutes shared between both lines
- $30/mo unlimited data for her
- $15/mo 200mb of data for me

With her 15% corporate discount the cost of me being on the plan is a $30/mo increase which I pay her ($20/mo increase in voice costs and $15/mo for data divided by 15% = $29.75) :)
