I found the other day that a CF card has a similar (if not identical) pin layout to the 1.8" drives used in the iPods. My mate has a 5th Gen iPod which is out of warranty with a dead HDD, so we wanted to experiment with it.

could i replace the HDD with a CF card in his iPod?

EDIT; i just read that the iPod Minis use microdrives, which have a similar interface to the CF cards. would it be better to use a CF card in an old iPod Mini?

I believe it has been done before with a mini and works well. Not sure about the 5G though.

I am sure someone can pull up the article where someone did this.

The person here replaced the hard drive of an iPod with a CF card. You can also do it with the mini, but I searched and couldn't find anything for the iPod Video.

Well, if nothing else, and your friend decides not to, I'd be interested in it for parts.

Oh, BTW, the 5Gs connector is completely different.

I would know. I popped open mine to swap the HDDs with my Photo until I got it fixed, but the connectors are completely different going in and out of the drive. The 4G/Photo has a standard CF looking connector, but the 5G has one of those thin ribbon cable connectors you find in laptops.
