I herd Verizon iPhones come unlocked regardless of wether or not it was purchased without a contract, but I'm not sure if this is true or if I must flash/unlock it first.

It will work on tmo, but your mileage may vary in terms of the type of service you'll get.

Without unlocking? Only a T-Mobile or Verizon iPhone 5. Or Straight Talk, but that's technically T-Mobile too. AT&T and Sprint are both locked.
