I have been digging hard to figure out why I'm having push notification "delays." While I am aware that ios by default goes into a power saving wifi mode when the screen is locked, in theory the cellular connection should fill the gap, allowing for the delivery of push notifications and imessages without a problem. Once the device is "woken-up" WIFI should pick immediately back up and uninterrupted usage should occur.
I'm not seeing that behavior, I've had an iPhone 5c first that received really delayed push notifications, especially noticeable by the gmail app. It happened on LTE (particularly when leaving a wifi network, once one notification was manually ushered in, all the rest followed without a problem). It also happened on wifi. I exchanged and bought up to a 5s. Same behavior (so that ruled out a hardware problem). Last night while testing, I noticed I couldn't even get imessage notifications on my device when it was locked- a big problem if you're a communications hog like myself.
I did multiple wipes, wipes of network settings, restored as new, I even consolidated into one apple ID (the one that I bought everything with, saying goodbye to some unused icloud features) thinking that this would make the difference if the number was on a new Apple ID. I was worried that it was related to the fact that I switched from Verizon to Straight Talk a few months ago and from an iPhone 4 at that time to a 5c. I thought maybe Apple's servers hated this switch... It didn't make sense though as my iPad 2 WIFI is working fine. I had about lost hope, but I continued to dig and I think I found the problem.
If you're one of the rare people having this problem (and it is rare because it's not everywhere on forums) please chime in with your thoughts.
One of the new features in IOS 7 was the persistent connection ability with MCTCP. Now, as I said I'm on straight talk, which isn't the most friendly of services for an unlocked 5s. I think there is a problem in fact with the multipath and straight talk/wifi communication- when wifi drops out it will "show" that I'm on LTE, but it's not behaving as if I am. Nothing is pushed on it's own instantly, except for about every 10 minutes when the normal iOS wifi wake occurs. I don't know if it's a carrier flaw or a software bug with the MVNO, but judging on straight talk's track record I'm going to go with the problem being theirs. Perhaps it's software fixable by Apple, but it's a major problem nonetheless.
This afternoon I may make a visit to the ATT store to sign up for gophone since it's a lot more friendly to having an iPhone on it's network. If you are one of the few having this issue please chime in your thoughts.
