I was using chrome for mac, and on a reputable website when I got the notification that a different website (not the one I was on) wanted to use my location. I declined of course, but was concerned as to why the website wanting to use my location was different from the one I was on.

Is there anyway something like this could infect my mac? Or is it nothing to worry about?

As mentioned this is not a virus and to date there are no viruses in the wild for OS X. More likely it is tracking/targeting by google. Remember with Chrome, google tracks your usage, just as it scans your emails in gmail to provide you with "target" advertisements.
