I was using my apple charger to charge my G4 and the power adapter was smoking!!!!!!!! Nothing happened to the screen at the time, but even with a new adapter, it will not take a charge. I tried a friend's battery and it worked until it ran out. What could this mean? Any advice would help. I do not have much money to fix it. Please help.

Have you tried resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU)?

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449

For iBook G4:

1. If the computer is on, turn it off.
2. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
3. Wait 5 seconds.
4. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

You can find other laptop directions on that page at the bottom (like if you have a powerbook)
