The children in social services generally require a level of care that [the couple] can't provide. Things like severe emotional disability, large medical challenges, etc.

The reason they haven't gone through an agency is the sheer expense of that process. It could cost up to and around $50,000

That is very sweet.

I wish them well in their quest.

This all seems rather public, they're going to be interviewed on the radio? Are they after a child or internet fame?

For one, what is the issue with it being public? Secondly, they've been doing this all by themselves with the help of their friends and family for a few months now and NPR found them, not the other way around.
The benefit of course being that if more people hear about it, it increases their chance find a child.

Jimmi, what other options do they have?? Realistically.

I don't know the state of the adoption process in the US. But if it costs $50k to adopt then maybe this is a good option. Though I can't escape that little feeling at the back of my head saying something isn't quite right about this. I mean there must be hundreds of other people in this situation that aren't, dare I say, pimping themselves through websites and radio.

Yes, there are, more in the thousands I would expect. It's not a new phenomenon.

Still, doubt is no reason for them not to proceed with their quest.

People who are looking to adopt (or really looking for any life changing event) can't just sit and hope it happens they have to take things into their own hands and actually work towards it.

How else would you propose this work?

These are good friends of mine, maybe someone out in mac land can help?
Even if you can't help you could digg the article up to get more word out. Thanks.

I'm not help, but I just want to say good luck to them. There are so many people out there that would be such good parents and can't have kids. It makes me sad when I see people take that for granted and treat their kids like they're nothing.
