Courier New font coming up as Arabic on Mac OS X

A friend is having an odd issue, and I attempted to troubleshoot it for him, but I am now even more puzzled. Here's the details...

He had opened a PDF with some type in Courier New in it, that did not show up. The same PDF was fine on other computers, including my Mac. At the time, he was running Lion, and I had him upgrade to Mountain Lion, which did not fix the issue.

I checked his Font Book, and when we previewed the font... it came up looking like Arabic.

I deleted the font from his computer, and copied the font off of mine, and onto his. But when he previewed the font on his computer, it still looked like Arabic.

Is there a setting somewhere, that is causing Courier New to look like Arabic, or be substituted somehow?

1. What did he view the PDF in? Adobe Reader, or Preview?

2. My Courier New Bold contains Arabic symbols. The other typefaces in the font do not.

IF the PDF is wrongly encoded, or the default input is set to Arabic, then you might get Arabic characters.
