Have owned my new Mac Mini for about two weeks now.

Twice, upon booting, I experienced a severe CPU boost where iStats Menu showed CPU at full capacity and there was an obvious slowdown.

Eventually, the CPU surge lowered itself to normal usage. Does not happen with every boot.

Any reason for this sudden surge and has anyone else experienced something like this?

I see the same thing on my Intel mini every time and I can only assume it is making full use of the available resources to complete the start up process as quickly as possible. The fans kick in for a few seconds and I can see the CPU max out in iStats, so I can only guess this is normal.

Thank you for the response. I won't worry about this then.

Uhm, yeah, that is Spotlight kicking in its mdworkers… just like in Windows, they think it is a good time to index the harddisk when you boot up. That and the weird update process with n restarts and x resolutions shifts makes me think that Apple engineers mostly have a M$ background.

I may have to return this Mini. The CPU stays up full for a good 5 minutes and bogs down the entire computer.

This is not what I had expected.

Update: Returning the Mini. CPU stayed fully loaded for over 5 minutes with each reboot and the entire OS went to a complete crawl. With only a few days left on the return window, I can't hope that something like this simply goes away.

This is entirely software related. You may want to try to reinstall the OS using recovery if you still have the Mini...

Appreciate the response.

I returned the Mini. There was 100% CPU usage for over five minutes and the entire OS came to a crawl.

There was a lot of software installed on it, but the memory was not maxed out.

I never had this issue on my 16" MBP with 64GB of ram. For that reason, I just got rid of the Mini and will use my MBP for desktop use instead.

I will wait until Apple refreshes the Mini again with the new MX2 chip and more memory options.
