Now then looking for a little advice.
I have a mid 2011 iMac 21.5" and upon most bootups and randomly during sleep or use the fans rev up and it sounds like a jet is taking off!. I've tried multiple SMC resets to no avail. I installed SMC FanControl which initially I thought had an effect. It didn't.
I also installed iStat(I think?) and that shows the CPU fan at 0rpm when this noise occurs and displays a normal value when it's running quiet so that's what makes me think it's the CPU fan.
The Mac really doesn't do any intense work as in no editing software no games just essentially for browsing, iTunes syncing and writing up coursework for work.
I'll be honest the issue has been ongoing for quite a while how but when it started it was out of warranty. Contacted apple support who were very helpful and in the end suggested taking it for repair. The nearest Apple Store is over an hours drive from me (in the UK) but an authorised third party company called StormFront is marginally closer.
My question is does anyone know how easy it would be to diagnose and fix said problem myself to save potentially a lot of money and driving/fuel?
I had toyed with the idea of just getting a shiny new one using this problem as an excuse but obviously it's more money and I've only had this one a little over 2 years.
Thanks
Dave
