Recently I had the opportunity to pick up a badly modded FW800 MDD: some cuts were made on metal skeleton, some capacitors damaged, it was all but a pleasure to see... anyway it was still good for parts (like PSU, Airport Extreme, processor card, copper heatsink and so on) unfortunately the previous owner dropped so much thermal paste on the CPUs that I had to remove the squared plastic shims on top of both 7455 to properly clean everything, the paste was completely filling the space underneath the shims, luckily it was of the non-conductive kind.
Both shims could not be removed without damaging the adhesive layer and now the CPUs are shiny and perfectly cleaned but naked...
My first idea would be to replace the shim frames with four Kapton stripes overlapped on the corners, as quick solution it could be effective but I need an advice about a possible more aesthetically pleasant way. I am quite sure this happened to many MDD user before... :)

TIA!

Just leave them off if you're removed them already. Take some care when re-installing the heatsink and you should have no problem. I think the spacers are mostly for a little protection for rough handling/installation of the heatsink. If you bang the heatsink against the die or drag it at an angle you can chip the edges/corners off. The various 'lidded' CPUs out now protect the silicon die under a copper pad.
